  • Contains 1/2 oz of .999 pure silver.

The 1/2 oz Buffalo Silver Round produced by the Highland Mint brings back to life an old American classic; the Buffalo Nickel. Also known as the Indian Head, the Buffalo Nickel was designed by the famous sculptor James Earle Fraser to replace Charles Barber’s Liberty Head Nickel. Introduced in 1913, Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel was produced by the US Mint for circulation until 1938. Today the coin stands as one of the most recognized designs in the history of the US Mint.

Each 1/2 oz Highland Mint Buffalo Silver Round features a similar design to that of the original coin, with the exception of a year of issue. At the center of the round’s front side is a profile image of a Native American man. To the right of the Native American is the word “Liberty.” On the back of the round is a North American Buffalo with the words “ONE HALF TROY OUNCE” above. Below are purity and metal indications which read “999 FINE SILVER.” There is also a Highland mintmark which shows “HM.”

Originally produced by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938, the Buffalo Head Nickel is considered among the most iconic pieces of United States currency. As a tribute to its memorable design, the acclaimed Sunshine Mint of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho has release the 1 oz Buffalo Silver Round. Each round is struck in 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver and contains the Mint’s official MintMark SI™ to prevent any potential incidents of counterfeiting.

Round Highlights:

  • Contains 1 oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Minted by Sunshine Mint in Idaho.
  • Features the popular Buffalo Nickel design.

The round’s artwork offers an uncanny likeness of the original coin’s design by James Earle Fraser. Serving as the central image of the round’s front side is an impressive rendition of Fraser’s Native American Chief. Just as in the original coin, his is portrayed in profile, wearing the feathers of his Native Tribe in his hair. On his face is an expression of stern resolution, perhaps expressing his determination to protect his people.

Displayed on the back of the round is the wild buffalo, standing poised upon the rugged terrain of the Western Frontier in fully rendered detail from the texture of its coat to the swishing movement of its tail. Appearing above the powerful bovine in an arched formation is the nation’s title. In contrast with the front side, on the reverse side several changes have been made to Fraser’s original design. For instance, the “In God We Trust” motto has been replaced by the words, “E Pluribus Unum.” Another change worth noting is that the round’s weight and purity appear at the bottom of the round instead of its mintage year.
